LAMB IN JAPAN

Advertising Disappoints

Publicity in Japan for New Zealand primary produce seemed practically non-existent, said Mr R. Elcock, who has just returned from a seven-week visit to Japan.

Mr Elcock was chief, postmaster in Christchurch for three years until he retired in 1960.

Although there might have been some publicity in Japanese, which he could not read, he saw New Zealand lamb advertised and on sale in only one department store, Mr Elcock said. He and Mrs Elcock visited many department stores during their stay, and frequently bought food at them.

He saw no sign of New Zealand butter and cheese. In contrast, he saw Australian butter and cheese on sale in many stores. Although Mr and Mrs Elcock ate many meals at restaurants, they never saw lamb or mutton on the menu.
