HANDLING GOODS
' New System Described Greater mobility is the big advantage of a new industrial handling system, described by Allan Murray in tho 8.8. C. World Service programme “New Ideas.” “ ‘Square One,’ as it’s called, allows unit loads of one or two tons to bo moved quite easily by hand,” be said. “It is done on a wheeled platform of up to four feet square, and in any pre-set pattern. These platforms, with suitable decking, are designed to run on inexpensive tracking that’s quite simple to lay. But each has two sets of wheels, one at right angles to the other, so that the load can be moved sideways at any point In the layout. The two sets of wheels are interconnected and closely synchronised, so that when you press a foot pedal, which doesn’t involve lifting the load, one set retracts while the other comes down for running at a 90degree angle to the track. “It’s much simpler than it sounds, quite easy to operate, and so well designed that maintenance is no problem. And finally, the makers provide a wide range of equipment for all kinds of loads. This is a system for factories and warehouses, airports and produce markets, container depots—and wherever unit loads have to be marshalled and transferred from point to point.”
