PAPANUI SERVICE

New Power Lines The first of the new electricity transmission lines from Islington to Papanui is expected to be in service by the end of June, and the second by the end of August. The lines will run from the New Zealand Electricity Department’s sub-station at Islington to the Papanui substation, and will boost the power supply to the northern part of the city. The department’s transmission line engineer (Mr P. E. Dunn) said yesterday that the six conductors, each of two wires, are now being run out. They are up from Islington to Avonhead road, a distance of about three miles and a half of the five-mile total. The conductors are carried by three arms on the double circuit towers of the first 66,000-volt capacity line. The 57 towers for this line have been built, and 25 for the second line are up. When the first new line is in service the existing line, which is of much lighter construction, will be dismantled from the Papanui substation back to Metrin street and replaced by the second new line. Both sub-stations have been uprated to take the increased supply.
