“Relocatable” Classrooms

Several education boards have now developed designs for classrooms that are economically and easily shifted from one school to another. This has been done to provide greater flexibility in the supply of classrooms and eventually to do away with the familiar temporary (and somewhat unsatisfactory) “prefabs.” The Wanganui Education Board’s experimental design incorporates eight strong interlocking panels which facilitate rapid assembly on the site. The building is mounted on piles, is 768 sq. ft in area, and accommodates 40 pupils. Its components are transported on two trucks and assembled with the aid of a crane. Later the classroom will be dismantled and erected at another school. The experimental building is held to be of the same standard as conventional permanent classrooms and is 20 per cent cheaper.
