Company May Mine Pyrites At Waihi

(New Zealand Press Association) TAURANGA, May 31. Zeacan Mining, Ltd’s, proposals for pyrites mining in the Waihi area called for the extraction of 1400 tons a day, the company’s managing director (Mr K. L. Frazerhurst) said in Waihi today.

Surveys indicated that the deposit of the ore started near ground level and was 220 ft wide and at least 550 ft deep. The length of the deposit was not yet known and the company was trying to determine it, Mr Frazerhurst said. The company intended to drill 50 to 70 holes in the deposit as part of further studies. Sufficient data to enable a decision on the company’s proposals were expected to be available by October. For six years and a half

there had been continuous investigation of the possibility of using Waihi pyrites for the production of sulphuric acid or as an additive to fertiliser.

The mining of 1400 tons each day would produce nearly 200 tons of sulphur a day. Nearly 600 tons of acid a day could be produced from the sulphur. “The project is of considerable importance as the use of locally-produced acid could bring about a reduction of fertiliser costs,” Mr Frazerhurst said.
