Problem Of Persistent Hydatids Offenders

The problem of persistent offenders was referred to by the chairman (Mr W. S. L. McRae) at a meeting of the Banks Peninsula Hydatid Control Committee. Mr Mcßae said that in one case, a dog owner had been required to present dogs with either true or false hydatids for re-test after every round of testing. These cases were detrimental to the hydatids eradication scheme, but there was insufficient power to deal with them under the Hydatids Act* The inspector (Mr R. W. MeCreanor) said that it Was too early to judge the effects of going on to twice-a-year testing. In the period from January 17 to May 26, covering the first round of half-yearly testing, there were 10 cases of true and 30 of false hydatids in 1969 dogs and 15 re-tests. The committee expressed dissatisfaction with the way

in which competitors at the Banks Peninsula dog trials had co-operated with the Hydatid Council's requirement that each dog should have a certificate of freedom from hydatids. On the motion of Mr E. L. Tyndall, the meeting decided to tell the council that there were anomalies in the exemption procedure, that the position at the trials had been unsatisfactory, and that there had been a poor attendance of dog owners at the special testing strip established for the trials.
