Timaru Leading Squash Contest

With five rounds of th* A grade squash rackets Interdub competition completed, Timaru has built a commanding lead of U points over It* nearest rival, Ashburton. Team points are: Timaru 42, Ashburton 30, Chester 20, Officers 24, Christchurch 24, University 22, Worcester 20, collegiate 12. Since the poor beginning to the season the level of squash has risen steadily, with a greater competitive spirit evident. In the latest aeries, eight of the 18 matches went to five seta with players finishing exhausted after very good displays. At Ashburton, the local teaip, without G. L. Bird, was no match for Timaru. winntng only one match of the four. The newly selected New Zealand representative, G. A. Davidson, faced a determined B. J. Rippin who

had his but game of the Mason, driving to a good length and playing short angles to perfection. Davidoon hit an unusual number of loose shot* which enabled Rippin to extend the ralildee and make the ball difficult to kWI. L. G. Milne (Chrietchurch). finding R. M. Garrett fWorceeter) a little below his beat, waa in good touch and might well have caused an upset. The first three seta were all won and 1-owt, 10-8. When Milne took the first from 8-2 down with control and good placement, he secured victory for hl* team on games. Another improved performance wa« that of R. D. Monk (Chester) who led J. H. N. Pine (Collegiate) two games to one, before Pine struck a good length, cut his errors to a minimum, and volleyed decisively to win the last two. B. v. Hamilton (Worcester) continued to advance up the Canterbury ladder with a fiveset win over the more experienced S. Suckling (Christ, church). Result*:— Collegiate g points beat Chester 2 J. H. N.
