Polish Trawlers For N.Z.?

The possibility of Poland exporting modern fishing trawlers for nse in New Zealand waters had been discussed with representatives of the fishing industry in Wellington, said the Polish Consul - General (Mr Jan Cedzynski) in Christchurch last evening. He said he was not familiar with the prices of the Polish i i trawlers. |

Mr Cedzynski said that Polish trawlers were among the most modem in the world. They had been exported to Norway, France and Britain, which had highly competitive fishing industries. To further Interest New Zealand in Polish trawlers, technical details on their operation and capabilities were being obtained. Poland was one of the biggest exporters of fishing boats and it also built equipment for processing fish. Mr Cedzynski said that he 11 realised New Zealand was I keen to develop its fishing in-

dustry, using the latest overseas techniques. He thought Poland could help. “We are exporting fishing equipment to other countries of a type that should be suitable for New Zealand and we check all the equipment we export, on our own boats,” he said.

Mr Cedzynski said that since the war Poland bad developed from almost nothing into the seventh biggest shipbuilding nation.

Poland was also hopeful of selling more gliders to New Zealand. A few had arrived already. This would be given

impetus by the world gliding championships to be held at Leszno, Poland, in June next year. New Zealand gliding enthusiasts would compete. Poland also hoped to develop a market for pickled Polish cucumbers. Some were sold in Wellington about three weeks ago for about 5s a jar. "Our pickled cucumbers are a delicacy,” said Mr Cedzynski.

Yesterday Mr Cedzynski, accompanied by the Polish ViceConsul (Mr Z. Boniewicz), met officials of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and the Canterbury Manufacturers* Association.
