Double To Southland
Golden Glen and Lonvato won the oncourse double for Southland stables at the Waimate Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday.
Golden Glen won the Rattray Hurdles handily and Lonvato the Waitaki Gold Cup narrowly to return £34 7s 6d for £l. Supporters of the Golden Glen*High Bank combination received a concession double dividend of £6 for £l. Golden Glen, an eight-year-old Cassock gelding from A. C. Beckett’s Invercargill stable, showed superior stamina to Melhar for victory by threequarters of a length In the Rattray Hurdles. The winner and runner-up had the finish to themselves. Royal Burgh tiring from the lead into third in a gap of five lengths. . , . This was Golden Glen’s first win as a jumper, but he came up with some sound placed runs at times earlier in the season.
ONLY A NOSE Lonvato, a close second at Gore a week earlier, nosed High Bank away from victory in the Waitaki Gold Cup. , They had a sustained duel well clear of the others, having drawn out in the last two furlongs. Lonvato, a Trovato gelding
trained at Gore by his partowner, B. P. Waddell, moved from the middle of the field to challenge High Bank for the i lead near the two furlonga. High Bank, which had assisted in. all the pacemaking, rallied when challenged, and
Lonvato had a battle to .ecure a head victory. Trovanta, the favourite, outstayed the top-weight, Bellcara, for a moderate third. The others tired badly on the soft track, and formed a weary procession a long way out.
