Manapouri Cost £56m.
(N.Z. Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, May 28. By the time the Manapouri power scheme is completed the Government will have paid out more than £56,000,000 for a job estimated five years ago to cost £31,000,000. The Acting Minister of Works (Mr Hanan) said revised estimates for the power project had been received from the consultants at the end of last month. The estimated final cost of the work was £56,399,933, an increase of nearly £18,700,000 on the May, 1966, estimate of £47,707,840. More than three-quarters of the cost increase, Mr Hanan said, was a result of the revisions of the tailrace tunnel contract announced last December.
