Children’s Court In April

Two boys and three girls, aged from six months to four years, were placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Division, on the ground that they were neglected and indigent, in the Children's Court last month.

A girl, six months old, found to be living in a detrimental physical environment, was placed under the division’s supervision for one year.

Borstal training was ordered for a girl aged 16 who appeared on charges of burglary and unlawful taking. Charged with unlawful taking of a motorvehicle, and driving while disqualified, a boy aged 16 was sentenced to the detention centre. In addition he was disqualified from driving for two years.

Periodic detention for six months was ordered in the case of a 16-year-old boy who was charged with being a rogue and vagabond.

A 14-year-old boy charged with theft was committed to the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare. Three girls aged 13 and 14, charged with theft, were admonished and returned to the care of the superintendent, as were two other girls, aged 13 and 16, charged with escaping lawful custody. Similarly dealt with were two boys, one aged 16, charged with theft, and one aged 15, charged with unlawful taking and unlawfully

getting into vehicles. The former was also fined £5, and the latter was also fined £37 10s, ordered to pay restitution of £4 19s, and disqualified from driving for two years. A boy aged 16, charged with burglary, was placed on probation for two years, as was another boy of similar age charged with being a rogue and vagabond. In addition the boy was fined £lO. Another 16-year-old boy, found on premises without lawful excuse, was placed on probation for 18 months. A boy aged 13, who was not under proper control, was placed under the supervision of the Child Welfare Division for two years, as was a boy aged 14, who was charged with theft. Four boys, aged from 13 to 16, and a girl aged 12, charged with theft, were placed under supervision for one year. A 14-year-old boy, charged with assault, and a girl aged 13, who was not under proper control, were placed under supervision for one year. A similar sentence was passed on a boy aged 16, who was charged with attempted unlawful sexual intercourse. Two girls aged 16, one appearing on a complaint that she was not under proper control, and the other charged with theft and being idle and disorderly, were placed under supervision until their seventeenth birthday. Charged with obscene lanuage, disorderly behaviour and burglary, a 14-year-old boy was placed under supervision for 18 months and ordered to make restitution of £1 2s 6d.

Three boys, aged 12 to 15 and a girl aged 15, charged with theft, were admonished and discharged, as was a boy aged 14 charged with burglary. Fines were imposed in the following cases: A boy aged 17 charged with assault, £5; a boy aged 16, driving while disqualified £25, with further disqualification one year; a boy aged 16 charged with assault, £10; a boy aged 16, harbouring an absconder from a Child Welfare institution, £10; two boys aged 15 who discharged firearms in a public place and drank liquor in a public place, £5 and £3 respectively; a girl aged 16 charged with assault, £7; a boy aged 16 driving at dangerous speed, £5 and disqualified for a further year; a boy aged 16, two charges of assault on female, £lO on each charge; a boy aged 15, theft, £7 and restitution £1 12s 6d; a boy aged 16 charged with obscene language, £10; a boy aged 16 charged with assault, £4; a boy aged 16 charged with obscene language, £10; a boy aged 14 using an air rifle, £2; a boy aged 16 driving while disqualified, £lO and disqualified for a further year.
