Halswell Rates

The rate levy of the Halswell County Council will be slightly lower this year, although the total levy collected will be higher as the rateable value of the county has increased by £351,155 to £6,923,035, it was decided when the estimates for 1967-68 were approved by a special meeting of the council. The year 1966-67 ended with a credit balance of £10,057. This was higher than expected as a grader which had not been provided for in the estimates had been replaced at a cost of £3989. Last year’s general rate was 15/16d in the £ and there was a special Museum Trust Board rate of l/40d in £— providing a total charge of .9625 d in the £. This year the museum rate has been absorbed as part of the general rate of four cents in the dollar which is equivalent to .9601 d in the £, so the 1967-68 general levy will be slightly lower. The council said it had held rates at the present level partly by restricting expenditure wherever possible to last year’s figures, and partly by drawing on credit balances to the extent of £5540. This policy had resulted in the postponement of some desirable new work on roads and footpaths and maintenance, and this was justified by the present economic conditions.
