½LB BUTTER PACKS
Price Would Be Higher (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 10. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) said yesterday that butter could not be supplied in halfpound packs without an increase in price. He said that packers would need to provide expensive new machinery or attachments for present machines to enable butter to be packed in halves. “This extra cost would be warranted only if there were an appreciable demand,” he commented.
Costs for the smaller pack would also be increased by additional labour, paper and printing charges. Mr Marshall said many grocers, including a large chain of stores, would already cut pound packs into half-pounds when asked. The Minister was replying to a question from Mr B. P. Mac Donnell (Lab., Dunedin Central). He asked whether, in view of the recent increase in the retail price of butter, it would be bought in halfpounds for which there was a demand by people living alone.
