Canterbury players were prominent in the Neville Hoskin junior tennis tournament at Riversdale, Southland on Tuesday. Miss B. Whelham (Canterbury), who was unseeded, beat the fourth-seeded Southland girl. Miss W. McLeay, 9-8, in her quarter-final of the under-16 girls* singles. Miss Whelham was down 5-8 but fought back to win. Results included:— Under-16. Mixed, quarterfinal: I. Leckie and K. Davey (Canterbury) beat T. Proctor and L. Elder, 9-4. Girls* singles, quarter-final: B. Whelham (Canterbury) beat D. McLeay, 98. Boys’ singles, second round: F. Versteeg (Canterbury) beat T. Proctor, 9-2: K. Lewis (Canterbury) beat K. Tangney, 9 2. Boys’ doubles, second round: Versteeg and Lewis beat K. Bateman and N. Baker, 9-4: N. Lyons and L. Proctor beat Leckie and M. Miller, 9-6. Quarter-final: Versteeg and Lewis beat P, Stevens , and A. Slewart. 9-6.
