NEW POWER LINE NEAR COMPLETION
A new line will be carrying power from Islington to Papanui by the end of next month. The first of two double-circuit lines, it will transmit as much power as the existing line. The second of the doublecircuit lines will be transmitting current by the end of August. The State Electricity Department’s transmission line engineer (Mr P. E. Dunn) said yesterday that the supply would be adequate for the full development of the Papanui sub-station and would meet the requirements of the north-west area of Christchurch for many years. The total cost of the project is £290,000, and is part of a major development of power supplies to Christchurch and district ,
An extension of the Isling-ton-Papanui work is the construction of a new tower line to improve supplies to North Canterbury. Workmen have laid the foundations for the towers. From the Waimakariri river to Southbrook the existing pole line is being replaced by double-circuit towers. Power will be running through this line by next Christmas, and will give two circuits as far as Southbrook. This will be extended to Waipara next year. Mr Dunn said that one set of foundations for the new line between Bromley and Islington had already been laid. Further work was being held up by a cement shortage caused by the railway strike.
