Air Mails
Sir, —If a car takes nine hours to get to Queenstown, how long would an air-mail letter take? Answer, 2] days. My letter was posted at 11 a.m. on Thursday; mail clearance, 11.30 a.m.; air-mail closes 1.30 p.m.; arrival Queenstown, 4.5 p.m.; yet it did not reach there until Saturday afternoon. Therefore the addressee did not receive it until Monday. I would not have bothered with air-mail had it not been important that it reach Queenstown before Saturday. Can the Chief Postmaster tell me if this is the usual air-mail service?— Yours, etc, PUZZLED. May 4, 1967.
[The Chief Postmaster (Mr M. E. Wilson) replies that air mail for Queenstown closes at 8 a.m. and is carried by an aircraft scheduled to leave Christchurch at 10.40 a.m. and to arrive at Queenstown at 12.40 p.m. This would account for part of the delay mentioned, but it is not possible to establish the reason for the remaining 24-hour period without knowing further details and examination of the relative envelope, Mr Wilson says.]
