Plastic In Engines

A pointer to the possible use of plastics in engines was described by Denis Desoutter in the 8.8. C. World Service programme "Industrial Newsletter.” He recalled that Rolls-Royce had developed reinforced resin for compressor blades In their ultra lightweight jet engines. “Now Monsanto have developed heat-resistant plastics at their research laboratories in Wales,” he said.

“They’re using panels made of polyphenylene reinforced with asbestos, with a newlydeveloped chemical process to bond tiie two together. This material retains its full strength st temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s early days yet, and this new material is not on the market, but it’s a pointer to the future.”
