COUNCIL’S WARNING

Shooting In Domain

Concerned with “indiscriminate” shooting in the Waikuku Beach Domain, the Rangiora County Council has warned shooters of the penalty for conviction for carrying firearms on a public domain.

The council has recently been fencing the domain and tree planting will begin shortly. The council had no wish for its staff to get “shot up,” according to the County Clerk (Mr A. A. H. McKenzie). “There are a few deer In the domain and the shooters, mainly adults, have been after these, as well as the odd duck,” he said. “With the start of the duck shooting season, there’ll probably be more still.”

The Waikuku Beach Domain includes not only the recreational area, but also land to the south and plantations along the coast

Under the act governing domains, it Is an offence to carry firearms in a public domain, or discharge a firearm from or into a domain. The maximum penalty is three months’ imprisonment or a fine of £lOO.
