Talks On Boundary Adjustments
Although no dates have been set, preliminary arrangements have been made by two pairs of metropolitan local bodies to discuss boundary adjustments, and to see, as one county chairman put it, whether changes would be mutually beneficial.
The Paparua and Halswell county councils have agreed to meet, and the Waimairi County Council will arrange a meeting with the Riccarton Borough Council. The Heathcote County Council, which, it is suggested, should meet the City Council, has not yet discussed the proposal. The proposal for “paired” meetings came from the Waimairi County Council when five of the six metropolitan councils met on March 30 to discuss boundary adjustments. Waimairi’s chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) said that his council was making arrange-
ments to meet Riccarton, and would be happy to discuss boundary changes. Waimairi would consider making either minor or major alterations if it was shown that they would be of benefit to both parties. “We want to approach this issue with an open mind,” said Mr Rich. “It would be no use holding the meeting in a cut-and-dried frame of mind.” Halswell and Paparua have agreed to meet, on a day to be arranged, and Paparua, after its ordinary meeting on Monday night, had an informal discussion on the subject
