POTATO SUPPLY
Growers’ View The Potato Growers’ Central Ward Committee believes that any undue increase in the prices of potatoes will be attributable to speculation. A statement issued by the committee says that at its recent quarterly meeting it discussed recent press statements on prices and the supply of potatoes for the coming season. Delegates from all North Canterbury districts were present and reports on local conditions were received. Full-scale harvesting had started or would start soon in most districts and it was considered that, in some instances, yields were slightly above earlier estimates. Adequate supplies of table-grade potatoes should now be available, and with an increasing supply it was considered that any further increases in price would be restrained. The committee was of the opinion that if there was any undue increase in prices it would be attributable to speculation.
