LAND FOR PARKING
Railways Still Opposed The Lyttelton Harbour Board has found the new Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) no more sympathetic to its request for the release of railway land at the port for parking than was his predecessor (Mr McAlpine). His inquiries on the availability of railway land south of Norwich quay for parking had been completed, Mr Gordon wrote to the board yesterday. Mr McAlpine had said there was little land available as it was necessary to maintain access to the loading bank and the goods ySrd and also to the rear of the leases fronting Norwich quay. The position had not improved, and he was not able to assist the board. “There are things the Minister doesn't know,” Mr F. W. Freeman said. “The land was reclaimed by the people of Canterbury, but now the whole progress of the province is being held up because we cannot get the reading and the parking we need at the port.” “I am very disappointed that the Minister has just rubber-stamped a previous decision without seeing the land for himself,” said Mr J. Brand. The board agreed to renew its invitation to the Minister to visit the port and Inspect the land.
