Rotary Canvasses For Tourists
The international committee of the Christchurch South Rotary Club hopes many Americans will learn more about New Zealand in the next few weeks.
Last night members of the club prepared for mailing on Saturday material about New Zealand which will be sent to 5000 Rotary clubs in the United States. The club feels that it will approach between 300,000 and 400,000 Americans who want to travel and can afford it. The chairman of the committee (Mr H. E. Menrath) said last evening that the project would not only further international understanding at a Rotary level but might also develop into something which would bring profit to New Zealand as a whole. Started nine months ago, the project has been supported by 27 organisations, including airlines, hotels, travel agencies and transport companies. Mr Menrath said the response had been so good that funds raised as donations bad expectations.
In the envelope which the president of each of the American Rotary clubs will receive are two attractively coloured travel brochures and a letter from the elub president (Mr E. Dash) which provides information about New Zealand. One brochure was provided by the Tourist and Publicity Department and the other by the South Island Publicity Association. Mr Menrath said the idea might be adopted by other clubs with other destinations in mind.
