ADDINGTON MARKET Another Good Sale For Store Calves

Store calves again met a very good sale at the Addington store stock market yesterday. There was an entry of more than 900 head, and values were fully firm to 10s a head stronger.

The store calf market, in fact, further confirmed the view that the cattle market this autumn has proved to be the one bright spot on the farI ming calendar. I Another large entry of store I lambs was offered, but the sale was a hard one, with fre.quent passings of average to small carry-over lambs. Main interest centered on the well-woolled well-grown , lambs from vendors who send forward a regular annual consignment. While ewe lambs were sold at up to 66s a head, and wether lambs at up to 575, these were isolated sales. There were many sales at 25s to 355. For the second week in succession, buying power in the I adult ewe section was practically non-existent. The top sale yesterday for adult ewes Iwas 40s. Senior agents could I not recall so little interest being shown in breeding ewes. The store calf entry totalled 1930 compared with 900 last sale. It comprised 310 heifers and 620 steers. I There was an entry of 6620 store sheep, compared with 5645 last week. It comprised 1900 ewe lambs (1830 last week), 3210 wether lambs (2760), 180 two-tooths (475), 1245 adult ewes (580), and 1185 wethers (none). i Store Lambs Store lambs again met a fairly hard sale. While there was a ' sizeable gallery of buyers, interest centred mainly on the pens of well-grown, well-wool-led lambs j Small carry-over lambs showed no improvement on last week’s rates, and there were a number of passings. However, where the lambs were in killable condition, there was interest from freezing company buyers, and values were firm. The wether lamb entry includ-

ed an annual consignment of Corriedales, and these sold from 46s to 575, values however were at a much more modest level for the rest of the yarding. Shorn Romneys sold from 42s 6d to 46s 6d for the best, while most of the Romneys in the wool sold from 33s to 375. with one sale at 45s 6d. Carry-over halfbreds and Corriedales generally sold from 25s to 355. With the exception of two consignments of halfbreds and Corriedales, ewe lambs also met a hard sale. An advertised line of Corriedales sold from 56s to 665, and some quite well-grown tussock-bred halfbreds, sold from 46s to 545. Romneys met a hard sale, with the best selling to 535, and others from 35s to 455. Sales of store lambs Included: Wether lambs: Miss M. Witbrock (Memorial avenue), 400 Corriedales at 46s to 575; R. A. Marshall (Okuku), 148 shorn Romneys at 36s to 39s 6d; J. T. M. Hollanby (Geraldine), 227 halfbreds at 30s to 335: M. A. Martin (Kaiapoi), 79 Romney cross at 32s to 37s 6d; J. D. Gallagher (Rakahuri), 255 shorn Romneys at 44s to 46s 6d: J. L. Clark-Hall (Hawarden), 131 Corriedales at 335; P. D. H. Bush (Parnassus), 75 Corriedales at 365: estate R. O. Bradley (Char, teris Bay), 96 Romneys at 35s 6d. Ewe lambs: Miss M. Witbrock (Memorial avenue), 400 Corriedales at 56s to 665. Adult Sheep Most of the adult sheep were very plain, but the entry included some useful Corriedales and late-shorn Romneys. The sale, however, showed no improvement on last week, and passings were frequent. Buying power was almost non-existent. Agents said they could not remember when there had been so little interest in store sheep. Where sales were made, the best of the sound-mouthed ewes sold to 40s, with others from 33s to 375. Only two pens of two-tooths were offered. These were finewoolled ewes, and they sold from 54s to 63s 6d. Sales included:— M. H. Westland (Cheviot), 180 two-tooth Corriedales at 54s to 63s 6d; J. G. Berryman (Clarence Bridge), 95 mated adult halfbreds at 395. Store Calves Store calves again met a very good sale. In size and quality the entry was very much the same as last week, except for an odd pen of very well-grown calves. A fair-sized gallery followed the sale, and values from the outset were fully firm to 10s or so a head stronger. The demand continued throughout. The yarding included a good selection of genuine tussockbred claves, including a line of almost 250 from Mendip Hills. As at some of the earlier sales, the medium to smaller calf appeared to be a little

dearer in comparison with the bigger calves.

Values were:— Best quality steer calves, to £26, with an odd sale to £2B 10s; average to good, £2l 10s to £24; and smaller from £l7 10s to £2O 10s.
