PLYMOUTH’S DECISION

Not To Honour Chichester (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, May 3. A British member of Parliament said yesterday that Plymouth’s decision not to grant Sir Francis Chichester the freedom of the city has made it the laughing stock of the world. He is the Liberal- member for North Cornwall and spokesman on West Country affairs, Mr John Pardoe. The Plymouth’City Council decided on Monday that Sir Francis Chichester would get a “royal welcome,” but not the freedom of the city, when he reaches Plymouth at the end of his voyage. “The Plymouth city fathers must change their minds,” Mr Pardoe said. “Sir Francis Chichester has made a magnificent contribution to Britain’s reputation throughout the world. “He is worthy to be counted among the greatest of the West Country’s great seamen “If Plymouth refuses to acknowledge this, she makes herself appear mean and pettyminded.”
