Advertising Focus On Winter Lines
(From Our Grocery Reporter) Now that the weather is starting to turn towards winter—and that nip in the air is beginning to be felt—the trade’s advertising will focus predominantly on winter lines.
Demand will shift towards such items as oaten food, both canned and packet soups, soup mixes and lines such as canned vegetables and canned fruit, whose fresh counterpart becomes more expensive as the year goes on.
Tamarillos. New season’s crops of tamarillos are now being harvested and canned. This fruit was recently in the news, when the name was changed from tree tomato. One canner has advertised that stocks of canned tamarlllo should be available later in May. Rice Price Up.—Australian growers have Increased the price of rice by about 4 dollars a ton. Rice prices through-
out the world have steadily climbed during the last few months, mainly because of shortage in Asia. Rice is in short supply in New Zealand at present and little relief may be expected until the new licensing period begins on July 1.
Canadian Salmon.—The Canadian salmon pack is the largest since 1962. In recent years the pack sold out quickly, but any merchant still holding a Licence should be able to import some this year. Shelled Peanuts.—South Africa will not be able to ship peanuts until September-October, but American peanuts are now quoted with shipments in June,
July, August and September. Prices increase as the season progresses: the difference between June prices and September prices is about £2 a ton. If importers wish to have stocks here early they can avail themselves of this opportunity.
