Plans For Marriage

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, April 13. The new member of Parliament for Southern Maori, Miss Whetu Tirikatene, plans to marry an Australian —a senior member of the staff of the Australian National University at Canberra, where she is studying to complete a doctorate.

Interviewed in Canberra by radio-telephone, Miss Tirikatene indicated tonight that there was not a formal engagement, but an “understanding.” There would not be a formal engagement until she had completed her studies for the degree of doctor of philosophy. The wedding would probably be later this year.

Miss Tirikatene will be back in New Zealand about April 21 for the opening of Parliament on April 26. It is not known whether her intended husband will accompany her, but it is believed likely he will remain in Canberra.

Later he may come to New Zealand, if he can find a suitable university post He is a nuclear physicist.
