“Government Will See Country Through”
An assurance that the Government would see the country through its present difficulties was given by the National Party candidate for Fendalton (Mr E. S. F. Holland) at a meeting at the Burnside High School last night. The Labour Party, having failed to convince the people they had been misled by the Government, was resorting to 1930 tactics and forecasting unemployment and the loss of Social Security. It was utter rubbish and hypocrisy to say the Government had misled the people, Mr Holland said. “I wouldn’t be seeking election as a National member if I didn’t believe that New Zealand is better governed under any circumstances by a National Government,” he said.
“I am not interested in any particular section of the country; I am interested in the people of New Zealand,” he said.
Interjector: You can’t be. You represent the rich. “The National Party represents every strata of society, and I don’t believe in class warfare,” Mr Holland said. All people had enjoyed the luxury of over-full employment and everyone had benefited by good government. They owed prosperity to the welfare of primary industry and this Government had encouraged the growth of both primary and secondary industries.
The pattern of importing had changed, and when restrictions were imposed, they had to be made at the expense of raw materials and other imports. “Those who belong to the Fendalton electorate—and I suspect that there are a few
here who don’t—should go to the polls on Saturday and boost the returns for the National Party so the candidate has a thumping majority,” he said.
