BEGGARS DROWNED
Seven On Trial (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) RIO DE JANEIRO, April 13. A former policeman and six of his colleagues thought up a solution to Rio’s beggar problem. They gave the beggars a hearty knock on the head with truncheons and then threw them in the river, a Rio court was told. Fourteen down-and-outs died in this way.
The prosecution claims that the beggars were drowned in the Guandu and Guarda rivers on the borders of Guanabara and Rio de Janeiro States between October, 1962 and January, 1963.
