Under Sea Canyon

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY, March 28. Australian marine scientists have discovered the world’s deepest - known submarine canyon, about 30 miles off the coast near Esperance, in Western Australia. The canyon, named the Esperance canyon, is 20 miles wide and 6000 feet deep—about 1000 feet deeper than the previous deepest known canyon, off the coast of southern California. A group of marine scientists from the Flinders University, Adelaide, made the discovery with Royal Australian Navy echo-sound-ing equipment, during a 12day expedition in the southern ocean.
