National Action To Save Taupo Urged

(New Zealand Press Association)

ROTORUA, March 28.

In Lake Taupo, New Zealanders had a national asset which should be preserved for all time, said the world president of Lions, Mr E. M. Lindsey.

Mr Lindsey, from Tennessee, was the guest of the Lions’ Club of Taupo yesterday. He took a particular interest in the lake and in measures for its preservation so that future generations could enjoy its facilities. Mr Lindsey advocated immediate action at national level to avoid enrichment and pollution. “If we had gone to work on these problems years ago

we could have alleviated them in America,” he said.

He commended the Taupo County Council’s scheme for establishing adequate reserves around the lake to ensure the retention of its purity, but because of the extent of such an undertaking, he was convinced it would need to be accomplished on a national basis. “It is a national asset and should be preserved on a national basis,” Mr Lindsey said.
