RACING Court Belle Is Wingatui Pick

“The Press’* Special Service

DUNEDIN. Court Belle is the early favourite for the Wingatui Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at Wingatui today.

Court Belle is top-weight with 8-10, 21b more than she carried to win the Wyndham Cup on New Year’s Day. Meantime, she raced well at Trentham for a fifth and a fourth over a mile and a half.

The second top-weight is Baal Hanan, with 7-13. He won this event last year and is back to his best form. Segundo, winner of the Medallist Handicap at Invercargill in November, has been consistently placed since. He has had time to freshen since racing at the Vincent meeting last month. Hushaway, third in the Otago Handicap last week, makes strong appeal, as does the other Riccarton candidate Gingerbread. Her impressive win in the Otaio Plate will earn her strong backing. The Greatest, although she could do no better than fourth against the milers last week, is a strong light-weight runner after her two impressive wins under high-weight conditions at Riccarton this month. Sailor’s Flight, Middy and Palisade are fancied for the first leg of the main double, the Autumn Handicap. The on-course concession double will be on the Allanton Hurdles and the February Improvers* Handicap. Naratam has been listed as an unlikely runner in the hurdles and his stablemate, Arabian Light; should dominate betting in the first leg. The February Improvers* Handicap fancies are Wytell and Somelight. Rain on Thursday night took the fire out of the track. If there is no further rain the going should be perfect.
