Polyominoes
Polyominoes. By Solomon W. Golomb. Allen and Unwin, 181 pp.
Polyominoes are shapes composed of certain numbers of connected squares; for example dominoes are composed of only two connected squares, hence only one shape is possible, but trominoes mtde of three squares have two possible shapes, and when we get to pentominoes made of five connected squares there are twelve possible shapes. With this fascinating book you get a set of pentominoes, hundreds of puzzles and games to play with them, and for the mathematically - minded some of the theory of what shapes can or cannot be made with polyominoes of any given number of component squares. There are also solid polyominoes made of cubes joined together. The reviewer’s children borrowed the pentominoes rintil a spare set was made for them. The book wisely contains instructions on how to make more as required. There are one or two small errors in the diagrams, but the book is very clearly laid out. It is a product of the spare-time recreation of a number of mathematicians mostly engaged in space flight research, and will be very useful to teachers struggling with the new mathematics.
