KILLING RESUMED
Abattoir Men Back
Christchurch would not go short of mutton because of the one-day stoppage on the mutton chain at the Christchurch abattoir, said the managing director (Mr J. H. Sproston) yesterday. On Wednesday only 172 sheep out of a tally of 1290 bad been killed when the men stopped work. Mr Sproston said all men returned to normal work at 8 a.m. yesterday. Beef and pig kills had not been affected by the dispute. The dispute, he said, was a difference of opinion between Department of Agriculture inspectors and the men on the mutton chain.
The department had directed that the manner of opening carcases be altered, because the present method was not hygienic. In the award, the men agreed to comply with Department of Agriculture hygiene requirements. “They did not like complying but eventually they did,” said Mr Sproston. “Apparently they are now doing so. “The department has the power to stop a kill any time it likes.
“The department requires certain standards. It is out of our hands, whether it is right or wrong.”
