MISSING GIRL
Fears Held For Safety
Detective-Inspector M. T. Churches, of the Christchurch C. 1.8., will today take charge of a large squad of detectives from Timaru and Christchurch searching for a 17-year-old Waimate girl who has not been seen since 12.15 a.m. on New Year’s Day. The girl, Gillian Margaret Thompson, was last seen about 50 yards from her home. She has never been absent from her home before. Waimate and Timaru police have made intensive inquiries without any success.
“In spite of broadcast messages and publicity and photographs in the local papers, nothing has been heard of Miss Thompson in the last five days,” Chief-Inspector G. E. Twentyman, officer-in-charge of the Timaru police, said last evening. "Fears are held for her safety. We cannot rule out foul play.” Miss Thompson is sft 3in, has short brown hair and a sallow complexion, and is of fairly solid build. She is due to start work in a Government department in Wellington next week.
