Love Made Way

(N. Z.P. A.-Reuter^—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Jan. 4. Love found a way through Maryland’s stringent laws against racially mixed marriages today when a young couple left on their honeymoon. A Naval graduate, Ensign Manuel Lopez, was refused a licence last Friday to marry Sally Smayling, of Kansas, because his father, a Washington lawyer, is a Filipino. The young Lopez was told that he did not qualify for a marriage 11c-

ence under Maryland statute which bars marriage between whites and Negroes “or persons of Negro descent to the third generation inclusive” and between white and “members of a Malay race.” Mr Lopez appealed to the State Attorney-Gen-eral’s office. It was agreed that, because of his mixed blood, he was a second generation Malay and the law, although it barred third generation Negroes, said nothing about second generation Malays.
