Shot Split Arrow In Bullseye
(N.Z. Pres. Association) WELLINGTON. The field target champion, B. Arnott, of Dunedin, trailed a former champion, J. Hinchco, of Auckland, by 18 points, after one round in the national archery tournament yesterday. Hinchco, eight times winner of the title, has 329 points, Arnott 311. Hinchco’s fourth and last arrow, at the small targets (range 30ft), split an arrow already placed in the bullseye by the Australian, N. Booth.
His arrow split the plastic head in the centre of the string notch and ricocheted into the outside of the target. The unusual feat (Hinchco has several wooden arrows he has split mounted as
trophies) did not please either archer. It cost Hinchco a certain five points (for an outer bullseye) and a possible 10 points (for an inner bullseye). Booth lost what he described as “one of my favourite arrows.” Scores:— Men. —J. Hinchco (Auckland), 329, 1; B. Arnott (Dunedin). 311, 2; G. Gillian (Dunedin), 297, 3; R. Fulton (Taupo), 295, 4.
