London Police Fire
(N.Z. Pratt Attn.— Copyright LONDON, Jan. 5. For the first time in 56 years a policeman fired shots in a London street last night He was chasing gunmen driving a stolen car. British police usually go unarmed but revolvers were issued to detectives after a tip that the wanted men had a shotgun and were prepared to use it
Cornered in the Shepheard’s Bush district the fugitives opened up with
a shotgun at four constables closing in on them. The shots went wild. One detective shouted: “We are police. Stop or I will shoot.” Then he fired twice into the air. The men jumped from the car and struggled with their pursuers. One was arrested, the other got away. The battle took place near the street where three London detectives were shot dead last August
