“ATTACK BY SHARK”

False Alarm At St. Clair (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 4. A report about 9.45 tonight that a man had been mauled by a shark at St. Clair beach, Dunedin, brought an ambulance, police patrols, and traffic officers to the scene in vain.

A local doctor received a call from a man who said he was in too much of a hurry to give his name. The doctor immediately called the ambulance over the 111 emergency system. Local surf club members reported that no patrol boats had been in the water at the time, as the sea was choppy and light rain was falling. Police and ambulance officers searched the shore for any signs of an attack but saw nothing. A shark has been sighted in the area in the past two. days.
