N.Z. Purchases At Newmarket

tN.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)

LONDON.

The British Bloodstock Agency remained the biggest buyer in the Newmarket December horse sales. The agency bought some horses for Australian and New Zealand buyers, but did not name all the buyers for whom it was acting, or indicate where every horse would be sent.

A total of 1164 horses was sold during the six-day sales which ended on Saturday. Horses bought for Australians include Zahaden, sold to the British Bloodstock Agency for 11,000 guineas; Donato, sold to an agent Mr G. Forbes for Doctor L. Catchlove’s Melbourne stud for 5000 guineas; Ballywit also sold to Mr Forbes for 5000 guineas for an Australian client: and Lumley Road, sold to the British Bloodstock Agency for 5500 guineas. The sales, offering the best British bloodstock were 119,300 guineas short of the 1964 record figure. The total for the sales was 2,053,107 guineas, an average of 1661 guineas a sale. However, the senio rdirector of the sales, Captain K. Watt, said it had been a

“highly successful year.” The turn-over had been “nothing short of remarkable.” The biggest impact on the market this year came from Japanese buyers who bought more than 200 broodmares through several different agencies. Most of the mares were In foal and in most cases the unborn foal was sold to another Japanese interest at more than the cost of the mother. American interest in British bloodstock was again high with the two top purchases—the three-year-old filly. Aerial Lady, sold for 25,000 guineas and Varna 11, a 10-year-o!d Italian-bred mare, at 24,000 guineas—going to American buyers. The British Bloodstock Agency recently handled the! sale of the well-bred Atilla to i the Lindsay Park Stud near Adelaide, owned in partnership by the jockey, R. Hutchinson and the trainer, C. Hayes. Hayes was at the Newmarket sales during the week, but no details of any purchases he made are known. Atilla’s price has not been revealed, but racing sources said it would be substantial. Atilla is by Alcide out of Festoon, winner of the 1000 Guineas. “THK PRESS" Classifieds offer a representative window. Whatever you want to Buy or Sell—a House, Car.
