Boost For Diving
TJIVING in Canterbury should make great strides ahead if the enthusiasm of the competitors matches that of the diving committee headed by Mr J. H. Johnson. The committee plans to re-establish diving on a broad basis, and to this end has mapped out a comprehensive schedule of instruction, interspersed with competition fixtures to gauge progress. One of these contests will be held in each of the next four months; Jellie Park and Sockburn Park will be the venues.
The committee wisely is not seeking startling results in the first season. Its schedule for this summer provides for the teaching of
five dives, three compulsory and two optional. By the end of the second season the divers will be expected to have mastered four compulsory dives and a selection of optionals. After three seasons they should be ready to tackle a full 10-dive series.
Mr Johnson regards the reverse dive as the “killer.” Particular attention is to be given to mastering this dive, and its variations. A considerable number of keen but unskilled divers is believed to exist among the junior ranks in Christchurch. The diving committee’s forward-looking policy is aimed at making at least one of them a New Zealand champion.
