N.Z. Urged To Sell Quality Products

Austria concentrated on selling its products on the term “Austrian quality” because only on quality could Austria compete on the world market, the Austrian Commercial Delegate for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands (Dr. H. G. Braendle) said in an interview in Christchurch.

Dr. Braendle thought that New Zealand, a country not richly endowed with raw materials other than wood and grass, would do well to concentrate on selling its pro-

I ducts on the term, “New Zea- ! land quality.” i Dr. Braendle thought the i potential for selling “New Zealand quality” was availI able.

New Zealand could become the Austria or Switzerland to the Pacific—a manufacturer

known for its high quality products.

The world’s growing standards of living, he said, would mean an increased demand for quality products. Austria was selling quality products such as machinery, electrical equipment, textiles (mainly embroideries), skis and ski boots to New Zealand. Dr. Braendle said that although New Zealand did not have a long history of generations of highly-skilled workers in manufacturing industries, it had hard-working in[telligent people to form a basis for a quality manufacturing industry.

He said that Austria was prepared to sell its highlydeveloped know-how to New Zealand manufacturers. In this way, he said, New Zealand could become much more self-sufficient and would at the same time develop the manufacturing skills needed for further development. Yesterday Dr. Braendle had talks with executive members of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. He will visit other main New Zealand centres before returning to Sydney, where he is based.
