DAMAGED YACHT

Ocean Race Entry

IN Z. Press Assn.—Copyright > SYDNEY

The crew of the New Zealand Trimaran, High Noon, is still hopeful of competing in this year’s Sydney-to-Hobart race.

The trimaran event will start on Boxing Day—the same day as the traditional Sydney-Hobart yacht race. High Noon sailed into Port Stephens, about 120 miles north of Sydney, on Sunday after taking 35 days to cross the Tasman. Her mast was broken off 12 feet above the deck, her radio was out of action, and she had only makeshift sails. The owner, R. Given, aged 42, a former butcher from Auckland, and the other crew member, S. Green, aged 24, a police constable from Dunedin, were weak from lack of sleep and hunger. They had been forced to ration their dwindling food supplies and were almost out of water when they reached Port Stephens. Given said he was still hopeful of competing in the Hobart race in spite of lack of finance to complete repairs. “1 may get a job with a boatbuilder and use his tools to repair High Noon,” he said.
