“Rightly Convicted”

(N.Z. Press Association)

HAMILTON, Nov. 23.

A member of the Greater Hamilton Road Safety Council, lost an appeal in the Supreme Court yesterday against conviction and cancellation of his licence for careless driving. Dismissing the appeal of William Henry Bates, Mr Justice Gresson said there was ample evidence, “predominantly from the appellant’s own mouth,” to support a conviction.

Bates had been fined £l2 10s and disqualified from driving for four months. “I am confident the appellant is rightly convicted and satisfied the disqualification is not excessive or out of line,” said his Honour.

Mr J. E. S. Allen, for Bates, submitted the penalty was excessive. His Honour did not call on Mr C. Q. M. Almao, who appeared for the Crown.
