Tavern Proposal For Bishopdale
Plans by the catering firm of P. Burke
and Company, Ltd., to build a tavern at I Wairakei road have been abandoned, and the company has transferred its proposals to Bishopdale.
The Wairakei road application for a specified departure | from the town-planning I scheme aroused hundreds of ■; objections when it was heard Iby the City Council’s plan- ' ning panel, and was subsequently declined. The com-; )pany lodged an appeal with )the Town and Country Plan-) I ning Appeal Board. The company’s general man ; ager (Mr J. C. Huhne) made (the following statement yes-! I terday:— "The directors of P. Burke |and Company, Ltd., have de-; I cided not to proceed with the) | application to the Town and) I Country Planning Appeal 1 ; Board for consent to a speci-1 fled departure from the dis-) trict scheme to permit the establishment of a tavern at i premises in Wairakei road, 1 Bryndwr.
“The company has come to this decision because certain other plans are now under way which will involve considerable capital expenditure. “Having regard to the fact that the company would certainly be concerned with possible commitments in respect of the Bishopdale licence
which has been authorised by the Licensing Control Commission. and also to the fact that a considerable body of local opinion appears at present to be unfavourably disposed towards the proposal for a tavern in Wairakei road, it has been decided in the circumstances not to proceed.”
