Young Players Impress

TWO young senior men’s A softball players, D. Chee (Papanul) and D. Birdling (Avon), have shown particularly encouraging form so far this season. Chee, who last season represented Canterbury B and Canterbury Colts, has returned some remarkable pitching figures. Against West Suburbs he came on with his team two runs down and tightened up the game considerably to assist the reigning champion to a 10-innings win. But his most remarkable figures were against United. Although United is not greatly endowed with forceful batters, Chee’s figures In striking out eight of the nine batters who faced him In his three innings on the pitching mound were excellent

The 17-year-old Birdling, hit a home run in only his third senior match, against M. Reid (Papanui). His diving catches and speed in the outfield have been even

more impressive and he should develop into a fine player.

However, bls tendency to dive to the ground whenever the ball comes within a foot of him could hold his batting back. This can hardly assist his concentration and has probably been developed from watching more seasoned players who, however, combine clowning with ability and do not allow the former to impede their performances.
