Top Men Wanted For N.Z. Boxers
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. The Auckland Boxing Association might soon try to arrange bouts against the top-ranked boxers in the world, irrespective of cost, for the New Zealand champions, T. George and M. Santos, said the A.B.A. president, Mr P. Robinson.
“We are now convinced that George and Santos are in world class,” he said.
“If we can arrange a couple of bouts against the lower-ranked world boxers, then we should have no worry
about getting bouts against the top men.” As a step to this, Mi Robinson said that the Auckland association had opened negotiations with A. Benitez, the American feather-weight, who is ranked eighth in the world, for an open-air bout against George at Carlaw Park on November 21.
Benitez recently beat the Portuguese, F. Sota, who was beaten on points by George at Auckland last week.
“Should George or Santos succeed against the lowerranked world fighters,” said Mr Robinson, “we will aim straight for the top, irrespective of the cost.”
