UNMARRIED MOTHERS
<N.Z. Press
WELLINGTON, Nov. 1
The Presbyterian General Assembly tonight endorsed a recommendation that more help should be given to unmarried mothers.
Figures were produced showing that about two-thirds of the illegitimate births were in the Auckland and Wellington provincial districts. The assembly accordingly asked the Auckland and Wellington Social Service Associations to give serious consideration to establishing hostels for unmarried mothers before the birth of their babies. The recommendation was opposed by a former Moderator, the Rt. Rev. S. C. Francis, who said it was far better for unmarried mothers to be in their own homes or in foster homes where they could be cared for as individuals.
"It is a reproach to our people that more are not offering their homes for this work,” said Mr Francis.
