The General Assembly will vote today to extend U Thant’s tenure as SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations for the duration of the current sessions, just two days before it would normally expire. The action will keep U Thant in office until December 20 and give delegates more time to try to persuade him to accept a second fiveyear term.
