DISMASTED AT START

Ocean Yacht Race The first ocean race ot the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club’s season was marred by the dismasting of the yacht, Saracen (D. W. Gallagher), within 100 yards of the start line. In spite of light conditions, the aluminium mast collapsed, and fellow yachtsmen and the class owner, I. W. Dennison, went to his assistance. But this did not stop Dennison gaining a gallant third place. The yachts anchored overnight at Port Levy and, with light winds, left early on Sunday for a long lead across Sumner Bay, and round a buoy off New Brighton. Under freshening conditions and brilliant sunshine, they broke out their spinnackers for the home run, finishing at Diamond Harbour. Results:—

Saturday.—A Class: Tainu! (R. T. Lloyd), 130. 1; Walr-lki (A. K. Archer), 134.1, 2; Tucana (C. A. Dickey and C. Buist), 134.8, 3; B Class: Karamea (W. S. Moore), 136, 1; April (K. D. Drayton), 144, 2; Karaka (I. W. Dennison). 145, 3. Ta-lnui won the Scott Cup for the fastest corrected time.

Sunday.—A Class: Pastime (A. Wright), 169, 1: Entreaty (D. C. Gould), 170, 2; Tainui (R. T. Lloyd), 174, 3. B Class: Wanda (T. A. Turner), 166.1, 1; Windward (J. R. Vincent), 172, 2; Ffantasy Two (T. Rolton), 174, 3.
