N.Z. Bowls Triples Still Unbeaten

(Special Correspondent X.Z.r.A.)

SYDNEY.

The New Zealand triples retained their unbeaten record in the world’s bowls championships in Sydney yesterday with a thrilling one-shot victory over Scotland.

In a see-saw third round game, the New Zealanders N. R. D. Lash and W. P. O’Neill (Auckland) and G. K. Jolly (Dunedin) fought back from 8-2 down after seven ends, to win 18-17.

Earlier the New Zedlanders convincingly beat Hong Kong 31-13.

The New Zealand pairs, M. R. Buchan (Te Aroha) and P’ C. Skoglund (Palmersron North) had mixed fortunes. They went down 19-12 to the United States in a shock result yesterday morning, but handed out a 34-10 thrashing to Kenya in the third round. Buchan and Skoglund could not pick the green in the morning, but regained their form in the afternoon and scored heavily against the Kenyans. In the afternoon’s triples, the ebullient Scotsmen, who earlier were warned to stop their antics and get on with the game, took a handy 6-0 lead after four ends. But from 8-2 down after the seventh end, the New Zealanders won the next five ends to lead 12-8. The Scots fought back and took the next five ends to lead 16-12 after the seventeenth. The New Zealanders came back yet again to lead 18-16 after 20 ends. The Scots won one shot on the last end and New Zealand scraped through. The New Zealanders could have set the seal on an easier victory when they were holding four shots on the nineteenth end with the Scot’s captain, H. Reston, to play the last bowl. Reston set down a brilliant drive which dislodged the kitty to save three shots, and New Zealand levelled the scores at 16 each. Earlier, the triples had an easy second-round match against Hong Kong in which they scored well with fine draw shots. The New Zealanders scored six on the fourteenth and had a five and a four. Buchan and Skoglund’s de-

feat at the hands of the unfancied American pair was a great shock after their superb play against Malawi on Monday.

The Americans. E. Wyeth and A. Hartley played sound bowls and led 10-5 after 11 ends. The New Zealanders could not produce the shots and never looked liked catching up. “It was a game I’d like to forget,’’ Skoglund said later.

It was a different story when they played the Kenyans.

Buchan and Skoglund scored on 13 ends and had two fives, two fours, a three and five twos.

Tomorrow the pairs will meet Ireland and Jersey. The triples will play Kenya and Malawi in the fourth and fifth round of sectional play.
